When I was a teenager braces often meant removal of 4 adult teeth, large metal bands around every tooth and lots of pain. We used to call them "railroad tracks" for obvious reasons. Now we seldom need adult teeth removed and the braces are much smaller. Braces can even be clear and nearly invisible.
