I'm the Lab Coordinator at Dr. Nappen's office. I will be working with you from the start of your treatment at Carmel Valley Orthodontics. I'll be assisting Dr. Nappen as we all work together to make your smile dazzling and your bite the greatest.
One of my jobs is to make sure that all orthodontic appliances made by our orthodontic laboratory are made correctly and are ready for your appointment. Our laboratory makes many different kinds of appliances but one of the most important is called a retainer.
Why do people need retainers?
Retainers keep teeth from moving. Normally people's teeth shift and get more crooked with age. Wearing retainers a few nights a week will minimize the teeth's tendency to shift.
Retainers are kind of expensive to replace so always put them in your carrying case or shirt pocket if you have to remove the retainers during the day.
The most common thing people do wrong with their retainers is to take them out at meal time and wrap them in a napkin. The forgotten retainers then get thrown away. Remember retainers will last for several years if they are not lost.
What should I do if I lose the retainers or they don't fit?
a) Wait until my teeth have shifted back to being as crooked as before my braces.
b) Wait until my teeth have shifted part way back to being as crooked as before my braces.
c) Call Dr. Nappen's office and schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
If you chose c) you obviously understand the retainer concept and you are myyyy... kind of patient. I look forward to working with you!!
